Sand casting process
There are a variety of types of sand casting, but the basic principle requires a mould to be formed from a sand mixture with a cavity of the desired shape into which molten metal is poured. Sand casting is a relatively labour intensive process and is suitable for larger castings and as a result, dimensional tolerances are not as tight.
Process
- Place a pattern in sand to create a mould
- Remove the pattern and therefore leave a sand mould with the desired cavity shape
- If a space within the casting is required, insert a core
- Fill the mould cavity with molten metal
- Allow the metal to cool so that it solidifies.
- Break away the sand mould and remove the casting
- Finally, excess material which includes the gate, runners, sprues and flash, must be separated from the castings
- Secondary operations are often performed to produce features not readily castable, such as tapping a hole, polishing, plating, buffing, or painting.
